Churchill & Lucky Number Seventeen

Not exactly breaking news this one, but a great story that I love to associate with the great game of roulette…

Back in the 1930s a couple of well healed young men named Winston Churchill and Anthony Eden hit the Cannes Casino in the south of France and as luck would have it, they bet a large amount of cash on the number 17 which duly came up – they ended up winning an absolute fortune!

Later, when Churchill was British Prime Minister during the war, when the situations facing the allies looked particularly grim Churchill would often turn to Eden and say “It’s about time our number 17 came up, wouldn’t you say?”

Churchill came to see the number as a good luck sign and it was all down to that roulette wheel in the South of France!
